ABOUT ME
PERSONAL PROFILE
I was born in Auckland, New Zealand in 1963. I wanted to be an artist from a young age with early experiences as a child playing with paint and materials to make things. My father is an artist and the home environment provided by both my parents encouraged me to be creative.
I enjoyed art at school and after leaving studied graphic design for 2 years at Auckland Technical Institute. Throughout my adult life I have made and created things, largely self taught.
Recently I have had the opportunity to study art and creativity through the Learning Connection in Wellington and will shortly be completing 2 years of full time study.
My work in general is a response to what I feel about what I observe rather than a realistic interpretation, although sometimes I like to incorporate some realism. I am influenced by colour, by patterns and the essence or immediacy of my subjects, be it landscapes, people or objects. Nothing is inanimate; all things vibrate with life and energy.
I will often use mixed media/collage as I love the different textures and qualities that various material bring.
I am frequently over inspired if that is possible and there is too much competing for my attention. If I am quiet enough though I can focus on capturing the essential elements I see and feel and give them a voice visually. I aim to do this with the respect and sensitivity they deserve.
