Heartsease Cherished
Mixed media, paper and plaster
45cm diameter. 2021
Growing wild in the gravel at the back of my home are hundreds of tiny Heartsease flowers. Their colours and patterns vary, sometimes a lot and other times just small subtle differences. Each one is a unique individual and to be cherished.

The mass of tiny Heartsease flowers growing in the gravel behind my home are like a carpet, all different but together unified in their similarities.

Jasmine in My Mind
Mixed media and on plaster and canvas,
80 cm diameter. 2021
This work is inspired by the Jasmine that grows through the hedge that I can see looking out my studio window, which I looked through a lot while being confined at home. The wild Jasmine is tenacious and is a reminder to me of what is needed in my life, particularly in these times. While painting, the smell of Jasmine in the vase permeated and inhabited the room and made its presence known in more than just a visual way. The green vase is a favourite and symbolises home and containment. The circles and pattern motifs represent connection and worlds within nature, with the larger circular frame encompassing and holding life. The plaster base has been built up in layers to add texture and to reflect the layers in nature and life.

Vase in the window
Mixed media on wooden board
60cm diameter. 2022
This painting combines a vase I have and some beautiful coloured glass windows in my home. The light glows through the windows in the morning and lights up the room with a golden glow.

In my Fathers Garden
Mixed media on wooden board.
45 cm diameter. 2022
This is a version of a painting by my father Robert Drake. The original is rectangular and hangs in my bedroom. It represents the feeling of reverence in the garden and the Earth.

Zoom in Blue
Mixed media on wooden board
50cm diameter. 2021
Studying remotely I took part in a Zoom life drawing class. The resulting painting is assembled zoomed in snapshots of drawings and parts of drawings. Technically I couldn’t zoom in during the class but did so after. The blue represents the computer screen glow.

YAY
Mixed media, textiles on wooden board,
60cm diameter. 2022
We can all do with some YAY moments.
This work is deliberately simple in its message and design but each person can take their own version of what this means for them. Many of the elements are recycled and the signs of wear are left because it’s OK to be a bit worn around the edges and home-made, with all the imperfections that come with living. The marks of the makers remain.
Tug the bell, hear the tinkle, say YAY in your heart and maybe have a wee smile.

Sun Night Hokitika
Mixed media, textiles on wooden board.
45cm diameter. 2022
This work is about more than one particular Sunset, although the inspiration came from sitting on a hill above Hokitika watching a magnificent Sun go down over the sea. It is something that stays in my minds eye.
The materials were chosen for their richness and depth. The silks for the rich golds and highlights of the sunset. Black velvet for the depth and absorption of the approaching night. Flecks of gold thread and wire for the remaining fragments of the Sun’s glow.

Her Joy is Her Sorrow Unmasked
Acrylic on Canvas,
76cm x 25cm, 2022
The landscape for this painting was inspired by the view from Whites Bay, Blenheim looking over to the peninsula South. The title is taken from a section in the book The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran. She brings joy and sorrow, forever entwined.
